Vices in Youth
Dr. Novello is a notable woman in society and she definitely influences both the young and older crowds in the field of health. In the article, she focuses on cigarette smoking in teens and how it progressed since the year of 1988. As she tried to figure out the reason as to why this happened, she used the cause-and-effect inductive reasoning. In the article, Dr. Novello's cause for the issue is the increase of Camel ads for Camel cigarettes. Another cause is that the youth is not thoroughly educated about the issue. As a result, Dr. Novello decides to work for more education in the schools and at the same time try to ban the cigarette ads. To conclude her reasoning, she implies that decreasing the amount of advertising for these cigarettes and at the same time increasing the knowledge of kids about this issue will probably help the lowering the problem of smoking among children and teens.

Dr. Novello is very commendable on her accomplishments with the youth. She sees that educating them on the dangers and consequences of smoking will hopefully make them more aware of this issue and help them say no when people offer them a smoke. I remember when I was in grade school, we spent an entire day learning about the negative effects of smoking and why it’s better to not smoke. Her efforts have not gone unnoticed for George H. W. Bush nominated her for the U.S. Surgeon General position. I really admire her for overcoming her past to create the life she wanted. She has helped many people in the process.
ReplyDeleteDr. Novello really did a wonderful thing raising youth's awareness of the dangers smoking cigarettes can impose on their health. Without people like her who are passionate about helping the youth and making sure they are protected from those who can potentially take advantage of them would put the youth at a serious disadvantage. Her use of the cause and effect inductive reasoning was very insightful. Without using this reasoning it would be difficult to know exactly what was the cause of the increase in number of teens smoking cigarettes. She did a commendable thing by taking the knowledge she had gained and making an effort to educate teens about the dangers of smoking and trying to get rid of cigarette ads.
ReplyDeleteYou brought up a good point that i did not notice. The idea about the lack of health education in schools is a good thing to bring up to discuss her arguments. This helps support Dr. Novello's argument because if the children are not educated then they will not be able to make wise decisions with their health. Fighting for schools to make a program or incorporate health education would help children to choose not to smoke. Also eliminating the commercials will help because we are strongly influenced by what we see on TV no matter how old we are.
